About our Honorees: Richard Becker and Larry Stein
Richard Becker
Raised in Bethesda, MD with a B.Arch from Syracuse University, Richard is a third generation architect and President of Becker Architects. The firm, established in New York in 1982 and relocated to Highland Park in 1989, has designed hundreds of residences and dozens of auto dealerships as well as other commercial and development projects in the New York and Chicago metro areas. Their work has been published nationally including recent cover stories in Smithsonian’s Preservation Magazine and AIA Chicago Architect.
Richard sits on the boards of CAMERA, StandWithUs, Doc Emet Productions and The Music Theatre Company. Past service includes the House Committee as well as the Board of Directors at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El and appointments to the Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission (1994-2000) and the Highland Park Zoning Board of Appeals (2000-2008).
In 2003 amidst the Second Intifada, Richard organized a solidarity trip to Israel with other concerned friends. On his return he began a regular emailing program to family, friends and others in the pro-Israel community in an effort to better inform them on media issues and current events. As his list expanded so did frequency and content. In order to accommodate a growing list and reach a larger audience, Richard switched to a blog format in 2014. ArchitectGuy posts news and commentary 6x a week at www.ArchitectGuy.us. Sign up for his daily alerts at www.ArchitectGuySignUp.us
Richard lives in Highland Park with his wife Nancy, also an architect and partner at Becker Architects. They have five wonderful children: Sam (31) and wife Rietje, Michael (29), Emily (26), Jack (26) and Zoe (20).
